April Showers Bring Growth

By Adam Low, CEO

It’s been an exciting month at SENTA Partners. On April 22, South Carolina ENT, Allergy & Sleep Medicine (SCENT) joined our physician-led, patient-focused alliance. This new geography with SCENT broadens SENTA’s reach and expertise in a key market by adding 21 providers who work across 10 locations. We are delighted to welcome the excellent providers and team of SCENT to the ever-expanding SENTA platform. They have been providing expert and compassionate care to the South Carolina geography for years. Like other SENTA practices, they have advanced knowledge through clinical research, helping to create new treatments to bring the highest quality of care to patients. (See more details below.)

You’ll soon read announcements of additional growth, expanding our ability to serve even more communities. This strategic plan allows us to continue our mission of providing the highest quality allergy, asthma, immunology and otolaryngology care leading to better patient outcomes.

Since our founding in 2019, with the capital investments made by Shore Capital Partners, SENTA has become stronger and more adept at providing strategic, operational and administrative support to our partner practices, empowering physicians to focus on their patients.

That’s good for the physicians and patients, of course, but it’s also good for the communities we serve and our most important strength—our people. SENTA practices deliver excellent care close to home, and SENTA is a great place to work. In fact, in this issue, we will introduce you to several people who are either new to SENTA or moving within the organization to advance their careers.

If you know of physicians, nurses, clinical support staff or administrative personnel who might be interested in furthering their careers at SENTA Partners, please tell them we’re growing. They can look here.

SCENT Comes Aboard

South Carolina ENT, Allergy & Sleep Medicine (SCENT), with 10 locations and 21 providers, is one of the largest otolaryngology practices in South Carolina. Robert Puchalski, MD, founding physician, says, “We strive to provide the very best care for our patients while creating a superlative work environment for our providers and staff. The relationship with SENTA provides a unique opportunity to collaborate closely with some of the best physicians in the world and gives our patients broader access to leading therapies and treatments. SENTA’s strong position in the marketplace, top-tier leadership and abundant resources will accelerate our growth and investment, making it easier for more patients to access this state-of-the-art care while maintaining our high quality of service.”

SCENT’s downtown Columbia, Irmo, Lugoff, Columbia Northeast and Sumter locations are accredited CT facilities by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission. Additionally, four locations are AASM-accredited sleep labs. The group also operates South Carolina’s only comprehensive vestibular testing and rehab center. In addition, SCENT has a partnership with University of South Carolina School of Medicine, providing elective rotations for residents and medical students.

Welcome, Nurse Practitioners!

Providing Patient Care in Different Specialty

On Valentine’s Day, Denise Claridy, RN, fell in love with a new workplace. Denise has more than 22 years of health care experience with 14 years of critical care experience, especially in cardiovascular intensive care. “During the COVID-19 pandemic, half of our intensive care unit drifted to ENT, and that transition paved the way for a career opportunity,” she says.

As she was searching for a new nurse practitioner role with an ENT specialty, she stumbled across an opening for Piedmont ENT in Atlanta, Georgia. “It was my first time hearing about the clinic and SENTA Partners, but it’s been a pleasant surprise,” she says. She went through a six-week orientation, shadowing and working with a different doctor each week. “I spent a week with each provider and had the opportunity to know their specialty and patient care style while also developing team play before I officially started. I appreciated the time; it was a way to sharpen my skills and get to know the team on a personal level,” she says.

In addition to on-site training, she also had online practice management training. “I especially want to recognize Trenyce Brewer, practice administrator, who frequently checked in with me to make sure I was acclimated to this new ENT specialty and didn’t have any unanswered questions,” she says.

Denise sees approximately 10 to 16 patients per day, and once a month, she provides call services to patients who need ENT services after clinic hours. “I have a love and passion for helping others and meeting patients where they’re needed most, and Piedmont ENT allows me to reach that satisfaction,” she says. Outside of work, she enjoys everything outdoors, especially SUP paddleboarding, aerial yoga and hiking.

Rejoining a SENTA Practice

Robin Brown, CNP, always had a passion for patient care. She was a nurse in the cardiovascular intensive care at Piedmont Hospital for two years and, during school, she worked in a pediatric home agency.

The first time Robin heard about SENTA Partners was during her clinical rotation in Atlanta Allergy & Asthma in Atlanta, Georgia. “I had a positive experience and was looking for job opportunities that had similar working environments. A doctor directed me to SENTA’s career page, which eventually introduced me to my current job,” she says.

New location, similar environment

“Piedmont ENT in Atlanta, Georgia, was the best workplace for me, as I was fresh out of school. The location was close, and it seemed like I could gain a lot of experience here,” Robin says. She joined the team in February and officially started working on her own the second week of April. “After several weeks of orientation, working independently is going smoothly. The doctors are ready to give a helping hand, but they also allow me to be independent, which is great because I learn best when I’m doing tasks autonomously,” she says.

Being part of the SENTA Partners organization has also smoothed some wrinkles in the onboarding process. “The HR department staff checked in with me from time to time and also gave me a checklist of documents and steps I had to complete. Onboarding can be a whirlwind, but the checklist helped me stay on track and focus,” she says.

Robin starts her day by reading through patient charts and seeing patients who come in for a variety of reasons, such as discomfort, further investigations, treatments and more. She follows up with patients after they meet with the doctor. “Since there needs to be a smooth transition and coordination between the doctor and my role, I make sure to read the doctor’s plans and preferences for each patient and ask questions to ensure I’m on the right track,” she says.

“Piedmont ENT is a great place to strengthen and grow my career while also being able to do what I love the most—taking care of patients,” Robin says.

Career Development

Experienced RN Takes on Role as Practice Manager

Amy Danielson, RN, BSN, is now the practice manager for the Rome, Georgia, office of Atlanta Allergy and Asthma. Prior to this role, she had worked at Northwest ENT’s ambulatory surgery center (ASC) for the past two years and at an orthopedic ASC for seven years before that. Even with a switch within SENTA practices, it’s a new skill set for her. “I was on the surgery side, and now I’m furthering my career on the clinic side. It’s very different but also very interesting to see how ENT and allergy and asthma fit together,” she says.

Amy was happy in her career, but she is also pursuing her MBA in healthcare administration, so she wanted to explore possibilities to develop her management skills. When she saw she could do so inside the SENTA network, that was exciting. “SENTA is growing every day, and that creates opportunities. Even though I’m being introduced to a different aspect of the business, there’s still a familiarity here,” she says.

Plus, moving within an organization is so much simpler administratively: no changes to benefits or accrued vacation or learning how a new employer works. “Growth within the company happened to align with my personal goals.”

Discovering Talents

Connections Made Have Lasting Impact

Jennifer Glass was working at a Valdosta country club last summer while she was finishing her degree in health sciences with a dual minor in deaf studies and psychology—and thinking about her career path. She’s been involved with the deaf community in Valdosta since 2017 and was working on becoming a sign language interpreter. She wanted to spend some time between her graduation and additional education getting some first-hand experience in an audiology practice and ENT practice. Joy Schunoff, practice administrator at ENT of South Georgia in Valdosta, Georgia, says one thing quickly led to another, and in September 2021, Jennifer joined the team in the audiology department.

Not only has it been a great fit, but the job has influenced Jennifer’s career already. She has since become a certified occupational hearing conservationist, and with the guidance and support of audiologist Jenny Carroll, AuD, she is now also a licensed audiology assistant through a state board and is working on additional certification.

“I started here mainly focusing on scheduling, patient interactions and helping my coworkers as needed. I absorbed part of the clinical side of the audiology schedule to help with work-ins from the ENT side of the practice. Shortly after, I fully took over both sides assisting our audiologist and our ENT providers with the clinical aspect of the audiology department. It was difficult at first to find a balance between the two sides, but with the help of Dr. Carroll and the nurses, I’ve been able to keep tabs on the needs of our patients and the needs of our practice successfully,” she says.

The work has reinforced her desire to return to school to earn her doctorate of audiology and become an audiologist. “Sadly, this would mean that I would have to leave Georgia and ENT of South Georgia behind, due the fact that there are no doctor of audiology programs in the state,” she says, noting she’s aiming for a spring of 2027 graduation from a program.

“This is a success story for SENTA Partners as well,” says Joy. Jennifer has been able to find an area that interests her, and in so doing, has become a valued and skilled member of the team. Plus, there may be other SENTA practices in the area where she lands, which could allow her to stay within the organization. “Part of the goal within SENTA Partners practices is that we would be able to have this pipeline of excellent candidates who can move from one location to another as their or SENTA’s needs change.”

Joy notes that the practice has long been working with nearby Valdosta State University and Wiregrass Georgia Technical College to identify smart, young candidates who are interested in health care. “We can offer them internships where we all learn from each other and also see if it might be a good longer-term fit,” she says. As Jennifer’s example shows, some of those connections take root and blossom.
